The Birth Story of The Future You Lab

About Me

Hey everyone, I’m Leo! My life’s a mix of things:

A Millennial and an undergraduate laser engineer in the past with a background in human psychology and a passion for science.

My mission is to replace outdated and recycled advice with psychologically grounded and applicable insights that tackle the interpersonal struggles Millennials and Gen Z have in this modern society.

I follow a conscientious approach mixed with science-based tools and social psychology to demystify the underlying causes of our struggles and stresses internally and externally.

I aim to bring awareness and critical thinking to see past these issues that shape our emotional and mental state and how we navigate adulthood.

The F-U Lab Story | The Awakening Moment

“The mind once enlightened cannot again become dark.”
– Thomas Paine

I grew up with a keen sense of intuition and emotional intelligence that helped me see, predict, and analyze things differently.

But, all of which I had to mostly suppressed due to external factors and pressures to ‘act’ or ‘think’ in a certain way.

As a kind, I was what you might call an A+ nerd.

Always top of the class. Good at sports. Shy a bit and with good small groups of friends and great parents (I love you too sister!).

To the outsider, things were great.

However, as I turned 14 or 15 years old, things started to change and I felt a strong shake in my personality.

“What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.”
– Ralph Waldo Emerson

Like many Millennials, I found myself questioning a lot of the traditional life advice as I navigated my teens.

I lived these years more or less within expectations and ‘ideals’ that shaped my existence even though I wasn’t internally agreeing with most of them.

Bottling all of that for a long period didn’t really go well as you might expect.

It was only after a dreadful existential crisis experience that I had an “aha” moment around my late teens.

I looked around and realized that I was very much unsatisfied and out of tune. (Like most teenagers I think, but mine felt more existential if you know what I mean).

So to cope (so I thought), I slowly dismissed myself from so many friends. I found shelter in my own room consuming movies and music all day.

Shockingly, I felt a strange sense of happiness in this disconnected state from the reality I was supposed to accept.

I felt happy because in a way, I had engineered my reality to fit my needs in that room.

“I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life”
– Henry David Thoreau

As a quintessential Millennial, I’ve lived the highs and lows this generation faces in many aspects.

From relationships, careers, and self-worth to anxiety, toxic people, and lack of real purpose to name a few – the struggles were real.

But so was my drive to understand why I faced these hurdles, and more importantly, how to overcome them.

As a result, that self-imposed exile experience sparked an unexpected passion – To understand myself more (maybe I was right and they were wrong or vice versa).

This shaped the next chapter of my life after graduating high school with honors and starting college as a laser engineer.

In college, my interests in human psychology and mind philosophy peaked the most.

Through grappling with my own interpersonal challenges and roadblocks, I discovered just how powerful these two fields are in peeling layers of delusion and dissatisfaction within me.

And so the journey began.

Fast forward to a few years of self-discovery and dozens of books consumed, another unexpected calling began to take shape.

I saw how desperately these revelations needed to be shared.

This is why I’m now on a mission to empower Millennials and Gen Z to have a healthy adulthood.

I’m not a scientist and I’m not claiming to have all the answers but this journey of self-discovery completely reshaped my life and way of being for the better.

It led me to make life-changing decisions that I never thought this real version of me would make.

I’ve renounced my religion, left my country and established myself in a new one, found my real purpose, cultivated the best relationships, transformed my attachment style from anxious to secure, and rekindled that long-lost intuition.

As a result, my life took a better turn in so many ways.

Does that mean I haven’t made any more mistakes down the line? Of course not.

But at least these mistakes are part of my own path.

So my goal is to lead you there by presenting various scientific research, findings, and anecdotes that are in many cases quite amusing, informative, and relevant to the young generation.

I believe once you gain profound insights into your psych, emotional hardwiring, and toxic patterns, you can finally cultivate the critical self-awareness needed to navigate adulthood in a more intentional and fulfilling way.

“Self-awareness is a superpower. Once you wake up to your conditionings, you’re free to consciously reshape your reality.”
– Sahara Rose

In the end, if you resonate with any of what I said or gone through, you’re in the right place and are still able to make the change.

Mapping Out Healthy Adulthood

Finance aside, there are 4 main pillars the blog will aim to address that most Millennials and Gen Z struggle with the most:

  • Attachments  –  Because insecurities, low self-esteem, missing opportunities, and not having a healthy relationship suck
  • Personal values –  Because building a healthy character and being confident with high critical thinking skills help you become collected and in inner peace.
  • Self Awareness – Because being in tune with your reality, conscientious, and emotionally regulated make you the type of person who is irreplaceable and of high value.
  • Toxic Relationships – Because you deserve to be in a healthy relationship and make healthy decisions, not in a ‘situation-ship’

The reasons why we struggle with these are many, but some of the key ones are:

  • Shifting Family Structures: Increased divorce rates and non-traditional family models can lead to attachment insecurity and difficulty forming healthy relationships.
  • Social Media Overload: Comparisons and unrealistic portrayals of what it means to be healthy, secure and mature can create confusion about relationship values and expectations.
  • Fast-Paced World: The pressure to achieve success quickly can lead to emotional instability and difficulty managing emotions effectively.
  • Delayed Adulthood: Extended adolescence due to factors like student loan debt can delay opportunities for developing healthy attachment styles and emotional regulation skills.
Despite that:

Our generation craves connection, but a rapidly changing world has impacted how we form attachments, define values, and manage emotions.

So my ultimate goal is simple:

To help you decode human psychology and behavioral science with relevant science-based tools to add to your adulthood stack.

Some people say I’m too mature for my age and some say that what I’m advocating is outrageous. I will let you be the judge on that.

Why The Future You Lab For Millennials and Gen Z?

Most of the problems and struggles Millennials and Gen Z have mostly are a result of passing down ideas that are no longer relevant.

So many things at play here, but perhaps the most influential is the self-help industry.

One that is filled with jargon only designed to play on our insecurities to appeal to future uncertainties. Examples?

  • Vague promises like ‘unlock your hidden potential’ with cherry-picked testimonials designed to lure you in and always keep you asking for more.
  • Complicated content to make it seem more scientific than it actually is.

What worked before may not necessarily work for us. Things have changed. So…

We need relatable real talk, the hard truths, not cheesy outdated cliches.

That is why this is NOT a self-help platform. It is a science-based platform for Millennials and Gen Z.

Therefore, most of what I will talk about will probably go against 90% of the advice you heard before online.

Want some examples?

  1. ‘Love at first sight’? Cute, but overrated. ‘Happily ever after’? No such thing.
  2. Actually, love is the effect of committing to a relationship, you don’t wait for it to be in a relationship.
  3. Negative emotions, when understood, can be powerful tools for growth. I.e. Chasing happiness is overrated.
  4. This might hurt! Let’s talk anime and K-drama. Most love it, but their love stories? They are some of the most toxic and unhealthiest out there. (Before you throw knives at me, don’t worry, I will write posts about that in the future).
  5. The most powerful force in our life? Incentives and habits. Nearly everyone underestimates how much our own beliefs and actions are influenced by these two that shape our values.
  6. The one major thing that dictates your behavior and orientation in life is your attachment style. Everything else follows.
Does that peak your curiosity and give you an idea? Let’s keep it here for now.
